Mrs. Joan Garber, age 93, of Jonesborough, passed away at her home on October 18, 2026.
She was born in England to the late Henry and Mary Cowley, on November 16, 1932.
Joan was a strong, tough, and determined woman whose love for her family, her faith, and the simple joys of life made her truly special.
She was an avid gardener who found great joy in tending to her plants and watching things grow. She also enjoyed knitting and was a fantastic puzzle worker, always ready to take on a new challenge. She loved watching golf, spending time with her beloved cats and her faithful dog, Charlie, and making memories with her family. Some of her favorite times were spent going out to eat and shopping with her daughters, enjoying their time together and the special bond they shared.
Her faith was an important part of her life. Joan was active in her church as long as her health allowed, attending Liberty Church in Kingsport and Trinity Baptist Church in Jonesborough. She was an avid prayer warrior who faithfully lifted others up in prayer, reflecting her deep love for the Lord and her concern for those around her.
Above all, Joan loved her family dearly, especially her grandchildren. They were a tremendous source of joy in her life, and the love she shared with them will remain a lasting part of her legacy. Though she will be deeply missed, her family can find comfort in the many cherished memories they shared, the strength she demonstrated throughout her life, and the example of faith and love she leaves behind.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Garber; sisters, Audrey Cowley and Deanna Reynolds; sons-in-law, Butch Freeman and David Chapman; brother-in-law, Herb Sherfey.
Survivors include her children, Kerry Freeman, Carol Chapman, Bobby Hathaway, Lisa Rowland (Jeff), and Shawn Garber; step-children, Dennis Garber and family and Carl Lynn and family; grandchildren, Joseph Freeman (Iris), Emily Elbe (Justin), Beth Bowman (Kevin), Chris Robinson (Scott), Michelle Painter, Rebekah Childress (Anthony), Daniel Rowland (Kimmy); great-grandchildren, Noah Freeman, Parker Elbe, Hannah Elbe, Isaac Bowman (Haley), Ethan Bowman (Brooke), Tristan Robinson, Ty Robinson (Savannah), Tuff Robinson, Troy Robinson, Caitlin Bacon (Josh), Eloise Childress, and Browder Childress; great-great grandchildren, Emmy Joe, Micah, Jax, Mia, Lottie, Collins, Cooper, and one on the way, Carter.
