Helen Marie Walker Scheuerman, 82, passed away in her home surrounded by her family. Born September 3, 1944, Helen lived a life filled with creativity, love, teaching, and an unwavering devotion to the people she called her own.
Helen was one of those rare people who seemed to excel at everything she touched. She was a tremendously talented artist and maker, creating beautiful things throughout her life through pottery, painting, cross-stitch, basket weaving, stained glass, and woodworking. She made countless quilts, each one carrying hours of patience and love. Her garden was another expression of that same spirit, and she spent every day tending it and sharing what she grew with others.
Helen was also a beloved teacher, and a favorite of numerous students whose lives she touched. She had a gift for making people feel seen, encouraged, and capable, and the influence she had on her students continued long after they left her classroom.
Above everything else, Helen loved her family. She was the devoted wife of Gary and the loving mother of Shane and Natasha and mother-in-law to Christy and Pete. She was a proud grandmother to Zachary, Zaylee, Finn, and Elliot, and being their grandmother brought her extraordinary joy. The hardest part of leaving this world for her was leaving her grandchildren. They brought her so much joy.
Helen was kind and generous, always willing to give to others, but she was never one to fade quietly into the background. She was fiery, strong-willed, and opinionated, and she wasn’t afraid to say exactly what she thought. Those who knew her best will recognize that combination immediately, and it was part of what made Helen, Helen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Flora and Henry Walker; her twin brother, Henry Jr. and her sisters, Marilyn and Carolyn.
Helen did not want a traditional funeral. Her family will honor her wishes with a celebration of life at a later date, where family and friends can gather to share memories and celebrate her life.
Her family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to her friends and caregiver who were by her side during the last few months of her life. Their kindness, companionship, and ability to make her laugh brought her comfort during that difficult time.
She was deeply loved will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
