Kenneth Clay McKinney

04/03/2026

Mr. Kenneth Clay McKinney, age 95, of Jonesborough, passed away at his home on Friday, April 3, 2026.

Kenneth was born on November 28, 1930, to the late Charles Wiss and Anna McKinney, in Washington County, Tennessee.

He lived a life defined by passion, service, and a deep love for the simple joys of the world around him. An avid fisherman from an early age, he found peace and purpose on the water, whether casting a line in the ocean, a quiet lake, or a stream. Music was another of Kenneth’s great loves. He had a deep appreciation for bluegrass and was an accomplished guitarist and banjo player. His talent and enthusiasm for music brought joy to those around him, and he cherished the traditions and storytelling that bluegrass embodies.

Kenneth proudly served his country in the United States Navy. During his service, he traveled abroad, including time in France and other Mediterranean ports, while being stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. He was honorably discharged in 1950, carrying with him the experiences and memories of his time in the military.

Following his service, Kenneth made his home in the Johnson City/Jonesborough area, where he spent the remainder of his life. He retired after 40 years of service at Klopman Mills.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, R.L. McKinney; sisters, Nadine Collins, Janice Jackson, and Mary Ruth McKinney; grandson, Travis McKinney.

Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Peggy Ottinger McKinney; sons, Mike McKinney (Debbie) and Darrell McKinney (Lyn); daughters, Katrina Hyder and Kim Gent; grandchildren, Justin McKinney, Jessica Maskew, Morgan McKinney, Cory Hyder, Hunter Gent and Candace Steadman; numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

There will be no formal service, but a private interment will be held at Monte Vista Memorial Park.
