Karen Villanueva

03/17/2025

Mrs. Karen Villanueva, age 72, of Newport, TN, passed away at her home on Monday, March 17, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Karen was born on January 17, 1953, in Honolulu, Hawaii to the late Edward and Lorraine McNeill Mattes.

A lifelong learner, Karen returned to school twice after raising four children. Educated in psychology and nursing, Karen served at-risk communities across the country as a traveling psychiatric nurse. No matter where she was, Karen fostered lasting and rewarding relationships with those around her. An avid home chef and baker, she spread love, joy, and togetherness through delicious food. Her home was always alive with thriving plants nurtured by her green thumb and happy pets raised on her sweet demeanor. She found love a second time and married Wayne at Eagle View Community Church in 2022. They worshiped there together from then on. A bit of a Hibernophile, she reveled in traditional Irish music and culture, making her passing on St. Patrick’s Day serendipitous. Famously camera shy, Karen’s genuine, bright smile was seldom caught on film but lit up a room. Our lives were better with her and are forever changed without her.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Villanueva; her brother, Craig; sister, Cynthia; daughter, Pam; sons, David, Danny, and Billy; grandchildren, Otis, Zora, Willa, and Vedder; and ex-husband, Gregg.

The family would especially like to thank Karen and Wayne’s friends, co-workers, and fellow church parishioners who generously and lovingly offered their support and prayers during the intense battle at the end of her life.

Karen wished to forego a traditional memorial service. Details for A Celebration of Life will be shared separately.

Karen was “Danny’s Mom” to me growing up, and she was always a kind and interested in how you were doing and willing to help. We once filmed a silly American Revolution video for a high school class at the house, and she didn’t seem to mind at all that we were using her pots as helmets. She loved her family and they loved her back. I know how much she meant to all of her children. May her goodness and strength live on in them. Condolences, Nathan Figueroa
