
Wilma Jean Carter, of Sulphur Springs, Tennessee graduated to heaven on February 4, 2025 (the morning of her 90th birthday) at her home in Sulphur Springs, Tennessee.
Wilma Jean (Hubbard) Carter was born and raised at the foot of Indian Creek Mountain in Pound, Virginia.
She attended Riner Elementary School, Pound High School and finished her schooling at J.J. Kelly in Wise, Virginia.
She was an active member of Strong Tower Baptist Church in Johnson City, Tennessee. Wilma Jean, who is now spending eternity with her Savior “Jesus Christ,”.
Wilma worked at Esso Drive In, Short’s Supermarket and the Piggly Wiggly all in Wise, Virginia. Later in life, she was a care giver for many of her relatives including her father (Russ Hubbard), mother (Edna Hubbard), sister (Mildred Roberson) and husband (Donald Carter).
Her most important roles in life were being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking and painting. She even won some blue ribbons for her paintings at the Wise Fair. Wilma or better known to her grandchildren as “Mamaw Tootie” because she always used the phrase “Tootie Tootie Honey” was a friend to all people she encountered. As her granddaughter Jamie shared: “She was my sunshine on a cloudy day. Her consistent joy, her love, laughter, her prankster antics, her crazy driving, her ability to make any daily task a fun one, her caring nature and so much more will be so very missed. She was one determined woman; If she put her mind to something it was best to just get out of her way as it was going to happen.”
Wilma was so excited to spend this past Christmas at her granddaughter’s home in Forsyth, Georgia with her family; It was a very special time for all. During their time together Seth and Jamie asked her “What is the secret to life?” Her reply - “Always be good to everybody, trust God and say your prayers.” These are words to live by for sure.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Carter, her father James (Russ) Hubbard, her mother Edna Riner Hubbard, her sister Mildred Hubbard Roberson, brothers Huilet Hubbard, Hurl (Peck) Hubbard and Edward Hubbard as well as another sister that passed away in infancy.
Survivors include her son, Gregory Orr (Jill), her daughter, Donna Jean Jenkins (Rodney), a special grandson, who was like her own son, Seth Carter (Stacie), special granddaughter, Jamie Stinchcomb (Hunter) and great granddaughter, Tana Marie Stinchcomb plus many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-5:00 PM Sunday, February 9, 2025, at her church, Strong Tower Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow with Pastor Ancel Presnell and Pastor Jody Jenkins officiating.
She will be buried next to her husband Donald Carter in Veterans Cemetery in Johnson City, Tennessee.
