Douglas Craig Millsaps

08/16/2024

Douglas Craig Millsaps, age 54, passed away unexpectedly in Johnson City, Tennessee, on Friday, August 16, 2024. He was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee, and a son of Raymond Millsaps, Elizabethton, and the late Imogene Jordan Millsaps.

Doug married the former Sharon Bennett, on September 17, 1994, and moved to Jonesborough, Tennessee where he made his home for nearly 30 years.

He had an early career in X-Ray processing working for Southern X-Ray, RadTech, and Diagnostic Imaging, and ended a 25-year career at Johnson City Medical Center earlier this year, where his greatest joy was talking to patients he met and sharing stories about fishing and hunting.

Doug was an avid fisherman and hunter who was happier and at peace in the woods or on the water than any other place on earth.

Proceeding him in death are his son, Matthew Hunter Millsaps; his mother, Imogene; father-in-law, Bobby Jack Bennett.

In addition to his father, survivors include his wife, Sharon Bennett Millsaps; daughter and son-in-law, Sara Elizabeth and Hunter Carr; brother, David Millsaps; mother-in-law, Kathy Bennett; uncle, David Cooper; nephew, Davis Webb; a host of cousins and special friends, Ed Cobb, David Good, Will Hampton, Perry Jernigan, Philip Cornell, Richie Bartosh, and Carlos and Gary Campbell.

It was Doug’s request to have no formal service and to be cremated, with his ashes spread in his favorite fishing spot in the Dennis Cove area of Hampton.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, at Cherry Grove Baptist Church, 104 Cherry Grove Road, Jonesborough, Tennessee.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests memorial donations be made to: Ronald McDonald House, 535 Alabama Avenue, Memphis, TN 38105.

I remember going hunting and fishing with Doug way back when he was with Southern and I worked at Laughlin Hospital in Greeneville. He provided 2 or 3 of my most memorable experiences ever. Climbing the side of mountain that was straight up, raining at bottom of mountain snowing at top. Wade fishing for smallmouth that ended at some epic waterfalls. Great times RIP friend. Condolences to the family he was a great guy and always full of fun!!

Sharon and Doug always treated me like family. They cooked many meals for me just like I was one of their own. I have many fond memories over the years especially our July celebrations and fishing trips. If I ever needed anything, I could always count on Doug to help. Doug will certainly be missed. I pray for the peace that passes all understanding for this family now and the days to come.

Doug was always so good to me. He loved to cook and cooked so good. My favorite thing that he would make & send me home with were no bake cookies. Oh they were so good. Doug gave me something I consider precious and keep with me constantly. A week or two before I got married Doug gave me a buckeye and he said keep this Neta and it will bring you & Charlie good luck. He was right. Sharon my heart is just broken for you, Sara, Aunt Kathy, Uncle David, Doug's father & brother. I am praying and asking for God to wrap his arms around each of you!
