Kenneth E. Garland

07/29/2024

Kenneth E. Garland, 76 of Jonesborough, passed away peacefully in his home on July 29, 2024, surrounded by family while on hospice after living with Transverse Myelitis for the past 2 plus years.

Kenneth was born in Johnson City to the late Luther Ford Garland and Agnes Lucille Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Jolene McCarron Garland. Brothers: Delbert Garland, David Garland, Stanley “Buck” Garland, and sister Wanda Tipton (Glen).

Kenneth retired from the James H. Quillen VA Medical center after 23 years of service. He was a CNA in geriatrics and loved his work taking care of Veterans. Kenneth was also an Army Veteran having served during the Vietnam War while being stationed in Korea specializing in Hawk Missiles.

Ken’s personality was infectious; always wanting to make people laugh and put smiles on their faces. Ken was king of the ‘dad jokes” before it was cool.

Left to carry on his memory are his three daughters that he loved so dearly: Elisha Snyder of West Palm Beach, Florida; Shannon Tino of Jonesborough, TN, and Heather Sansbury (Tim) of Montville, OH or as he lovingly called each one of them: “Half Pint”, “Pooh”, and “Heady”. Grandchildren: Geoffrey Snyder, Rhnea Garland, Marty Guthry (Elaine), Penelope Jo Sansbury, and Timothy “Tripp” Sansbury iii. Great grandchildren: Dane Shanks, Harper Guthry, and Summer Lawson.

Family would like to extend their appreciation to all the staff of Amedisys Hospice, Regina Knowles, RN for making Ken’s transition to hospice easier, VAMC HBPC team: Deanna Patterson NP, Noel Estep, RN, Leah Mosley, LCSW. PCP: Jedidiah Gilliam, NP, All VAMC ED staff, Bryan Burton, RN, Kristina Middleton, RN, and lastly: WCJC EMS.

In lieu of flowers Ken requested that no one vote for Joe Biden or at least donate a bag of dog or cat food to your local animal shelter. Considering recent changes, the family assumes that Ken would say not to vote for Kamala.

Last, but not least, Ken wanted to tell all his family and friends: “BOO!” So that he still got the last laugh.

There will not be a receiving of friends but, Ken will be laid to rest with Military Honors at the VA Mountain Home National Cemetery on Monday, August 5, 2024, at 10:00 am. All who would like to pay their respects are welcome to attend.

Well y'all don't know me but my grandfather was a Garland and I have a cousin with the same name Kenneth Garland so I read the obituary to see if we're related. We may be.The reason I wanted to leave a comment is I would have loved this man his sence of humor and all I bet he was a joy. I too will honor his wish to not vote for Harris! Oh yes my grandfather was Raphe Garland originally from Buladean North Carolina .So I know this Garland will truly be missed and may God give you comfort .

Heather and family, I am so sorry to hear of your father’s death. Your mom and dad were a delight to be around. I knew when he was on the field trip, the students were in great caring hands. He always had a smile and some funny comments. They both were very proud of you. I am sure they will both be missed by all who knew them. You were very blessed to have such wonderful caring parents. I shall honor his request for voting! Much love to your family, Patsy Lewis from Jonesborough Elementary
