As the Lord gently closed the book of life, Sara Lou Runion McWherter, age 88 1/2, was called to her eternal home in heaven on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at 8:15pm, while lovingly surrounded by family and friends.
Sara was born on November 16, 1935, a native of Jonesborough. Sara's earthly journey was a living psalm of humility, gratitude, love, and an abiding respect for the tapestry of life woven by the divine hands of God.
In her professional pilgrimage at Pharmaseal & Baxter, Sara served with a quiet dedication reminiscent of the most faithful stewards.
A lover of God's earth, Sara found great joy and solace in her garden, tending to her plants with a tender hand and a prayerful heart. Each bloom in her care stood as a silent hymn of praise to the Creator, reflecting the beauty and order of the world He fashioned.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion in her brother, Robert Runion; her sons, David Dulaney (Kim) and Chris McWherter (Joann Johnson); her adoring grandchildren, Dustin McWherter (Rebecca) and Brooke Phillips (Josh); great-grandchildren Ned and Matilda, daughter-in-law, Kim Henegar.
Sara is now cradled in the arms of Jesus and reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Ned McWherter; her son, Gary McWherter; her parents, Chloe and Robert Runion Sr.; and her four-legged furry friend, Taz.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the earthly angels who provided care and comfort in her final days: Jeanette Hartsell, Diane Freeman, the dedicated staff at Amedisys, the loving congregation at the Mustard Seed Worship Center, and to the man who continues tending her gardens, Daniel Hartsell.
Educated at Lamar High School, ETSU Training School, and Tusculum College, Sara's commitment to learning was lifelong. Her faith journey was deeply rooted in the community of the Mustard Seed Worship Center, where she found spiritual nourishment, fellowship and life-long friends.
In a final act of selfless devotion, Sara bequeathed her body to ETSU Quillen College of Medicine, forgoing traditional ceremonies in favor of contributing to the greater good. A service to honor her life and her unwavering faith will be held at a later date.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Mustard Seed Worship Center at 897 Mayberry Road, Jonesborough, TN 37659. In the garden of memories, we find solace; in the promise of resurrection, we find hope. Sara's spirit, now free from earthly bounds, soars in the kingdom of Heaven, where every tear is wiped away and joy is everlasting.
