Mrs. Susan Markel, age 77, of Bristol, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, with her family by her side.

She was born on December 02, 1946, to the late Maj. Naaman Lee and Kathryn Meinhardt Myers in Vallejo, California. Her father was an US Air Force pilot for 24 years, and the family lived in France, Germany, and many US States.

Susan was a member of Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church in Bristol, Virginia. She graduated High School in Blacksburg, VA in 1964, Penn Hall Junior College in Chambersburg, PA, and VCU in Richmond, VA. She taught art one year in Hagerstown, MD before starting a family. She gave private art lessons when her children were younger, and she went back to work full time when her children were older at businesses in Baltimore, Harrisburg, Jacksonville, and Bristol. She enjoyed reading, travel, friends, music, art, and the theatre.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Judy Myers and brother, Naaman Lee “Chip” Myers, III.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Rev. John Markel II and his wife, Mary; daughter, Jennifer Susan Markel; grandchildren, Alyssa Markel, Cassandra Markel, Patricia Susan Markel and her husband José, John Louis Markel, and Alexandra Smith; sisters, Marybob Myers Rexford of Jacksonville, Florida, and Janice Gilmour and husband, Bruce of New Zealand; sister-in-law Sue Myers; nieces and nephews, Dana Canto, her husband Paul and their children J.D. and Gwen; Erin Bradshaw, her husband Chad and their children Brooks and Ford; Dylan Myers and his children Aiyanna and Julian; Anna Gilmour, and James Gilmour.

Susan was a giving person and will be missed so much by her family and friends. In her giving spirit she donated her body to East Tennessee State University Anatomical Gift program.

A memorial service will be held at Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church on Saturday. September 7, at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be beforehand at 10:00 AM.
