Jo Ann (Pannell) Horner, age 77, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024, at the Johnson City Medical Center following her battle with leukemia. She was a member of Reedy Creek Presbyterian Church at 6044 Orebank Road. Jo was an avid bowler in several leagues over the years, and she enjoyed a good card game, and she loved the company of friends and family. Jo had a wonderful sense of humor. She truly loved to hear and often repeated the many funny family stories that she had heard over and over since her childhood.

Jo was born in Kingsport, TN on July 18, 1946, and lived there all her life except for a brief residency in Indianapolis, IN. Jo graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1966. She worked for the Kingsport Press and then for the Kingsport Times-News as a Classified Sales Representative.

Jo was preceded in death by her parents, John Reece Pannell and Viola May (Culbertson) Pannell, her first husband, Ricky Gene Hensley, her second husband, Buford D. Horner and her daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Horner) Hutchings who passed away unexpectedly from an asthma attack on March 12, 2024. Jo is survived by her son, Ricky Gene Hensley II and his daughters, Elizabeth Hensley and Emmalee Reece Hensley. Jo was an only child, but her father had ten nieces and nephews who lived close by. As kids they played and spent time together almost every day and were closer than some brothers and sisters. Some referred to Jo as their “sister-cousin.”

A Celebration of Life Service will be held June 2, 2024, at 3 pm at Reedy Creek Presbyterian Church officiated by Reverend Marshall Steinle. In accordance with Jo’s wishes, her body was donated to the Quillen School of Medicine.
