Mr. Thomas L. “Tom” Smith, age 83, Johnson City, passed away Sunday, January 7, 2024, at The Waters of Johnson City.
He was the son of the late William Bufford and Ruth Conner Smith.
Thomas was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served in San Francisco and San Diego, California.
He was a graduate of Science Hill High School and East Tennessee State University. He retired from the Tennessee Department of Human Services.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jeanette Jilton, one brother, Charles B. “Charlie” Smith and brother-in-law, Clement Wilson.
He is survived by one sister, Charlotte Wilson, Knoxville; sister-in-law, Charlotte Patterson Smith, Johnson City; brother-in-law, Joe Jilton, Johnson City; one niece and several nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 3:30 PM, Thursday, January 11, 2024, at Philadelphia Cemetery with Mr. Larry Jilton officiating.

So sorry to hear of the passing of my Uncle. When I think of Tommy, I remember how during a difficult time in my life, he came by and took me to dinner. Our conversation wasn't about what I was going through, but about some of the crazy things my dad did. We must have spent 2 hours laughing which took my mind what I was going through at the time. He was like that and I will miss him.

I was so sorry to hear of Tom’s passing. I worked with him at DHS for many years. My deepest sympathy and prayers for the family.
Tom was a great friend, always ready to be a support ear or a "let's go to lunch" buddy. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He is in God's hands of love forever. I hope that is of great comfort to his family.
