Lloyd William Collins

Lloyd William Collins, age 94, of Bristol, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2023.
He is survived by his children Cheryl (Dennis) Sams, Beverly (Mike) Shankel, Mike Collins, all of Bristol, VA., Debbie Bogese of Prince George, VA., Joe (Becky) Collins of Martinsville, VA., 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren: sister Maisie Thompson, Glade Spring, VA., and sister-in-law Jean Collins, Thomasville, NC.
He was preceded in death by his bride of 72 years, Betty Boardwine Collins, his parents, John F. and Florida K. Collins, brothers, Merle Collins and Tom Collins and sisters, Elizabeth Collins, Mary Taylor and Lockie Woodward.
Born in the Big Tumbling area of Saltville, VA on June 29, 1929, Lloyd grew up fishing and swimming in Holston River and Tumbling Creek. He graduated Meadowview High School and went to work at Plasterco in Saltville. He then went on to become an officer for the Virginia State Police where he received a letter of commendation from J. Edgar Hoover for the capture of an FBI fugitive. Lloyd finished the last 35 years of his career at Valleydale prior to retiring.
Lloyd was a master craftsman, having the ability to simply look at a picture of something and reproduce the construction without formal plans. He was always designing and building furniture for Betty and the kids or engaging in remodeling projects. He helped construct the current structure that is home to Midway Baptist Church in Bristol, VA. He was also an avid reader and devoured books with the same passion that he consumed Betty’s home cooking.
Following his retirement, Lloyd and Betty enjoyed camping with family and friends and embarking on RV trips across the USA. Their camper also served as lodging when traveling with the S.O.W.E.R. ministry volunteering to refurbish children’s camps and church buildings. Additionally, Lloyd took Betty and the RV on the road lending aid with the Lebanon Baptist Association Disaster Relief.
A celebration of Lloyd’s life will be held Sunday, December 3, 2023, at 4:00 P.M. at Midway Baptist Church, 21318 Old Dominion Road, Bristol, VA. In leu of flowers donations may be made to Midway Baptist Church.

So very sorry to learn of Lloyd's passing late Sunday evening, completely missing the celebration of life service you had that afternoon. Don't know how I missed the publication, but please accept my apologies for not being there. Lloyd and Betty were sure a wonderful couple, inspiring the rest of us with the importance of family. Your whole family is a testimony to so many of us of God's wonderful design of family and loving relationships. I will be praying for you all in these days going forward. Of course, I know Lloyd and Betty are now together in God's beautiful Heaven, rejoicing, and looking forward to all you kids joining them one day soon! Blessings to all of you!
