Gordon Lee Luttrell, 82, of Jonesborough, TN passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on December 28, 2022 in Johnson City, TN. Gordon was born on September 12, 1940 to Roy and Virginia Luttrell in Sandoval, IL. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by Janice Luttrell, his wife of almost 34 years, sons Brad Luttrell; wife Debra of Orlando, FL and Brett Luttrell; wife Natalie of Portland, OR and Stepson Ken Stissel; wife Michelle of Mooresville, NC. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition, he is survived by three sisters. Daisy Williams; husband Louis of Salem, IL, Myrna Nez; husband Walter of Centralia, IL and Kathy Ray; husband Wayne of Lake Placid, FL. He is also survived by his brother Mark Luttrell; wife Jenny of Lebanon, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents mentioned above and his sister Janet Spitler and her husband Robert.
Gordon grew up in Odin, Illinois and graduated from Odin High School in 1958. While there, he was a star basketball player. He married and moved to Florida where he lived for most of his life. He held various jobs including working with the Apollo Space Program, Walt Disney World, teaching HVAC classes at UCF and worked at Darden Restaurants where he was a Department Director. He was also an excellent Auctioneer. He was an avid fan of the Miami Dolphins. He was also a great gardener and reaped an impressive bounty of produce each year.
Upon his retirement he bought a large farm in Grovespring, MO where he raised beef cattle. While there, he became a member Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. It was here that he began his journey in serving the Lord. He then moved to Jonesborough, TN and became a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Jonesborough. He continued his service to the Lord by participating in local ministries. He helped plant churches in various areas. One ministry he especially enjoyed was witnessing to the Appalachian Trail hikers each Spring. It was called “Trail Magic”. The church brought meals for them and gave them snacks to take with them when they returned to hiking. Another accomplishment during this time is that he received his diploma in Biblical Studies from the Southern Baptist Convention of which he was very blessed to have achieved.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Jonesborough, TN on February 11th at 2:00pm. Pastors Lynndon Welch and Brian Nulf will officiate.
