Arlie S. Johnson, Jr. of Johnson City, TN, age 96, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2022.
Arlie was a native of Bristol, TN, and was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Gertrude Slemons Johnson of Jonesborough. He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Jones, and her husband, Bob, of Telford.
In early life, he served his country in WWII in the Army’s 100th Division of the 398th Infantry. His unit saw many conflicts in France, Belgium, and Germany. Arlie’s favorite memories were of his voyage on the famous but overcrowded Queen Mary, fording the cold shores of Normandy, and stumbling upon a fellow Bristol soldier in a dark German barn as a naïve 18-year-old boy. He framed his war experience with this, “I, like thousands of men like me, saw some tough duty as well as some educational opportunities throughout our service.” Though distinguished with many medals, Arlie was most proud of his 2 Purple Hearts.
After honorable discharge, Arlie played basketball and baseball while attending King College. He was also proud to play for the Bristol Twins. His professional life centered around his long career of 38 years with United Telephone. Arlie was truly “a people person,” serving in his community on many economic development boards in Johnson City, Elizabethton, and Erwin.
Hunting, fishing, golfing, woodworking, gardening, and photography were his favorite hobbies. His family and friends will greatly miss Arlie’s witty remarks, unique humor, and his impeccable outlook on life.
Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at Mt. Wesley Cemetery with Pastor Jeremy Dykes officiating. Friends are requested to meet at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home at 10:15 AM, to go in procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bob Jones, Danny Jones, Gary Miller, Mat Miller, Benton Slemons, Benny Stinnett.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Fund, or Mount Wesley Cemetery Fund.

Sharon, I am so sorry for the loss of your dad. I am always here for you ❤.
I met and got to know Arlie at Brookdale. I would see him sitting on the front reading a paper. Starting talking with him over the months about baseball. Such a nice man. Sorry to hear of his passing.
Mr. Arlie was such a wise, witty, and lively fellow! He will be missed. His legacy, stories, and adventurous zest for life remains with Sharon and those who were lucky enough to have ever been in his presence. His life is a lesson to us all. Enjoy life, love those we cherish, and never let a day pass with giving it our all. Mr. Arlie was one of a kind. May his family and friends find comfort knowing his was a life well lived and they were well loved.
