Doris Dean, age 96 (a month shy of 97!), passed away on December 11, 2021. She was born in Hammond, Indiana and graduated from Bryant and Stratton College in Chicago. She appreciated the growing support of the arts in this area, was an avid recycler, and she believed we must preserve the past in order to ensure the future.

She is survived by her three grandchildren Rhett Smith, Heather Schwerdtfeger (and Jon) and DeAnne Smith; William Smith, son-in-law; and four great-grandchildren Nora and Maxton Smith, and Owen and Maggie Schwerdtfeger.

I am shocked, had tried calling on Christmas Eve, a tradition for 50 years. I first met Harvey and Doris in 1966, Evansville, Indiana, I was a junior in high school, both were great friends and loved them both. Over the years they both gave be guidance in college and in my professional life. Havey was in my wedding, and I was so proud to have them both there. We had planned on visiting Doris the coming April; I will surely miss visiting such a great friend. I don't know how Doris passed, but I pray she was at peace. Love Steve Calhoun 513-708-2884

I am deeply sorry to hear about the passing of Doris. She reached out to me when I first moved here because she was a friend of the family. Her husband was the brother of a family friend from Tampa. She made me feel at home, and we tried to get together every now and then to talk and have lunch. I greatly appreciate her generosity and her friendship.

Doris will be missed by all who knew her. We met shortly after we moved to Jonesborough in 1990. She welcomed us and was one of those people who made Jonesborough a very special place. Her dedication to our community and commitment to service was an example for all who knew her. She will be missed. We're so fortunate that she was a part of our lives.

What a shock to read of Doris' death. She had just recently invited me to visit and see her new apartment. We both worked at ETSU for many years and rode to work together a lot. She was a very good friend to many, and will be missed terribly. Sympathy to her family on her passing.
