Anita Smythe

01/27/2021

Anita Smythe, age 77, of Jonesborough passed away peacefully on January 27, 2021.
She was born on July 9, 1943 in Rome, New York, the eldest child of Allan Murray Spooner and Jean Schumaker Spooner and lived in West Edmeston, New York during her early years. She received her baccalaureate degree from The State of New York College in Buffalo, New York, and her master’s degree from The State of New York College in Brockport, New York.
Anita married the love of her life Randy Smythe on December 28, 1963. They have lived in Lyndonville, Medina and Saugerties New York and moved to Jonesborough in 2003.
During her lifetime she was a teacher of special education children in Medina, New York, and later taught busines, travel, and tourism courses at Genesee Community College in Batavia, New York. Anita always loved nature and even enjoyed apple picking in the fall in Western New York apple orchards. She rescued cats from animal shelters and several times adopted cats that had been abandoned in the winter cold of New York. She spent several years managing a travel agency which fostered a love of travel with her husband. During the course of their marriage she traveled to Hawaii, Alaska, and Israel, and later, after her retirement they traveled together to many states, Canada, England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary and Italy.
Anita had always loved sewing and became a prize-winning quilter with many quilting friends in Tennessee. She was in the Old Town Quilt Guild and served as president for two years from 2010 to 2011. She served as the vice president prior to that, and served as the membership chair. She was the chairperson and coordinator for the first charity quilt project sold during story-telling, raising money for the local food pantry in 2017. The name of that quilt was "Stars Over Jonesborough". Anita was an award winner at both Asheville and Pigeon Forge quilt shows. She was a member of a neighborhood quilting group since 2005. That group is named "Sometimes We Sew".
Anita’s cherished her family. She is survived by her husband Randy, her daughter Deana Smythe Healy and husband John (Minneapolis), brother Bill Spooner and his wife Pam (Jonesborough), brother Tom Spooner and his wife Nancy (Kenai, Alaska), sister Linda Spooner Gibson and her husband Jack (North Sutton, New Hampshire) and many nephews and nieces. Also surviving is their English “daughter” Sandra, who lived with the Smythe family for a year as an exchange student in 1982 and who became part of the family, her husband Bill Jackson, and their daughter Emily. They have lived with the Smythe family on their visits to the states, and the Smythe family has lived with the Jacksons in Stafford, UK.
She was preceded in death by their beloved son Evan who died on December 12, 2020 in Hilton Head South Carolina.
Interment will be at a later date in the family plot in Lyndonville New York.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to Ballad Hospice.

Sandra, Bill and Emily Jackson
As an AFS student in 1982, I was blessed with becoming a member of Randy and Anita’s family, with Deana and Evan in Medina, New York. The love and support they showed and have continued to express over the years are beyond measure, and for which I will be forever grateful. I hold dear many memories of my American family and our travels to each other’s homes, across the US, England and throughout Europe. Each visit, gathering and celebration holds a special memory in my heart, which I will continue to treasure. Some 20 years ago you welcomed Bill and Emily into your life too, with our English sense of humour and sayings, not always having the same meaning, but the laughter that this created will be forever revisited. With all our love, Sandra Bill and Emily.

I was sadly informed today of Mrs. Smythe's passing from a tourism colleague. Mrs. Smythe was my tourism professor at GCC in Batavia. I was an older student who had unfortunately who went to GCC to explore tourism after waiting tables for 10 years after high school. I was mixed up in a bad relationship for that 10 year period which caused me to drop out a couple of times to finish my two year degree. When I finally separated from that relationship and went back to finish Mrs. Smythe welcomed me back with no judgement. She took an interest in seeing me succeed and provided me with an opportunity that changed the course of my life. In December of 1998 she informed me of an opening at the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce Tourism department. She was serving on the tourism committee at the Chamber at that time and encouraged me and another girl to apply for the open position which would also qualify as my upcoming required internship. I didn't even know what a Chamber of Commerce did at that time but I mustered my courage and went through the interview process. To my surprise and delight I was hired as the entry level tourism assistant. Within 5 years I became the director and have remained in my role here at the Chamber ever since. This past December I celebrated 22 years with the Chamber and in an industry and job that I am passionate about. She literally changed my life and put me on the course of my life's work. Over these many years I have thought of her often and have wondered how many other lives she changed in this way. I am sorry for your family's loss. She was a wonderful person and meant a great deal to me. Sincerely, Kelly Rapone, Tourism Marketing Director Genesee County Chamber of Commerce - Batavia NY.

I have many memories of Anita when we were young teachers at Oak Orchard Elementary School. One in particular was going to an auction with another friend in Lyndonville. Three platters of different sizes were offered together, we bid on them and each of us were able were able to get the size we wanted. I am still using mine and when using it I think of that day. Anita is now at peace and I am sure she is quilting up a storm.

I did not know Anita, but I do know Randy going all the way back to high school days. I think I spent as much time watching Lyndonville sports as Medina. This is what I would say to Anita. You must have been very special to have caught Randy's eye. We both went to Buffalo State and Brockport, so it's likely that you and I crossed paths and perhaps debated ideas. I was so sorry when your son died so young. I know you will be missed greatly. Your family has known great pain and loss this year. I am sending my condolences to the entire family. You were loved by so many people. So rest, my Friend. Rest.
