Walter Lee Sherfey

12/09/2020
Mr. Walter Lee Sherfey, Jr, 75, Jonesborough, departed for Heaven on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 after a lengthy illness at Four Oaks Healthcare Center.
Mr. Sherfey was a native of Jonesborough and the son of the late LtCol Walter Lee Sherfey, Sr. and June Windle Sherfey.
He is survived by his brother, Lloyd W. Sherfey and his sister-in-law Linda; his nieces Allison Sherfey and Catherine Finnigin (and Husband Brian); and his 2 grand-nephews Marcus and Jacob Finnigin. Additionally, Lloyd D. (Buddy) Windle, first cousin to Walter, was as close as a brother to him throughout their lives.

Walter was an outstanding student throughout his years of education in Washington County, graduating as Valedictorian of his Jonesborough High School Class of 1963. He attended the University of Tennessee, served in the US Army Reserve, and became a dedicated employee of First Tennessee Bank for over 38 years. Walter made numerous new friends in his job, as well as remaining in touch with his high school classmates and old friends of many years. He had an astounding memory for details and facts; and loved to discuss politics, sports, history, and movies with his friends at work and in Jonesborough. Walter was a devoted Catholic and attended St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Ashville, NC.
The family would like to extend a sincere Thank You to some special friends: Janice and Jim Olinger, who helped and comforted Walter during his time of extended illness at Four Oaks; as well as to Joel Conger, Sam Mitchell, and David Brown who assisted him greatly while he lived alone in his home in Jonesborough.
A memorial celebration will be held at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home in 2021, at a time and date to be determined, followed by a private burial in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Jonesborough.

I met Walter Lee only once or twice growing up, but Lloyd was a close friend through high school and beyond. My sympathies are with the Sherfey family and friends, especially to Lloyd, Sam & Joel, remembering the many good times we had.

I want to send my condolences to all of the friends and family of Mr. Walter Sherfey. I met Mr. Sherfey a little over 15 years ago. I was in college working for my family's jewelry store. He would always come in a talk watches, movies, guns or whatever was on his mind. We became fast friends as he became part of our family there. He was a regular and we adored him. Through the years we have kept in touch. I would check on him from time to time and he would call every once in awhile to talk about old stories or my family (whom he always asked about especially after my grandparents passed). He even came to Thanksgiving dinner with us one year with my Uncle Jay who he was also close with because he worked on many of Mr. Sherfey's watches. I talked to him not long ago and he seemed in good spirits. He ended every conversation with, "you still have your watch I gave you" and I always replied "I sure do Mr. Sherfey". I think of him often with a warm heart. He was a wonderful, giving, comptionate, spiritual man whom I considered family and who will be greatly missed.

To the family, I am so sorry for your loss. Walter was a special kind hearted person. I enjoyed our discussions and visits while working together. He always took time to share a few interesting facts or movie reviews with me. I’m thankful that I had the opportunity to know him and work together for several years.

Buddy Windle and family
Walter Lee was a very special cousin. Buddy was close to the entire Sherfey family, spending many summers in Jonesborough. He also had many enjoyable conversations with Walter Lee during his stay at Four Oaks. He's already being sorely missed by this Windle family.
