Evelyn Jewell Jones, Born: August 21, 1929, Died December 7, 2020
“Rejoice when I am gone, I will be free of the pain”. Mrs. Claude Jones, Jewel, Mama Jewel, Mama Jones, Mamaw Jones, Evelyn, she answered to many names, each in their own special relationship.
“Too blessed to be stressed”; “Temper Lord but don’t throw me on the trash heap”; “Fit as fiddle but my bow is bent”. Many of us have heard one or more of these responses from Jewel Jones. She was grateful to live one more day, one more Sabbath. “I know I am still here for a reason: God is not finished with me yet; I still have work to do.” She attributed her living into her 90’s to her “faith in God”.
Jewel was an amazing woman in her own right. She was self-educated and was always ready to share her knowledge with so many. Passing on tidbits of how to take a leaf and grown a tree. As a last gesture of devoting her life to further the education of others, she has designated her mortal body to be donated to Quillen College of Medical for Research in hopes of benefiting others.
Ms. Jewel had a true passion for nature and exhibited it in so many forms. She cared for all God’s creatures, nourishing back to health a bird from a broken wing; a wounded dog from a broken leg, or even a black snake named “Geronimo”. In laying season, her chicken Henny Penny pecked on the kitchen window every morning and Jewel would open the sash and let Henny Penny nestle in her favorite place… gave Ms. Jewell a fresh egg for the morning breakfast.
Of many roles, she was a mentor, always prefacing advice with: “You’d better listen to me” and then continue to share advice, solicited or not. With a caring and nourishing heart, she was a soul that truly wanted to help people. She always shared and helped distribute food to friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in life by her husband Claude Jones and her brother Bill Byrd. She is survived her two children: Steve Michael Jones, his wife Chris and his children, Eric, Kristy and Jeromy Jones and their mother Karen Cole; her daughter Nancy Jones Hasty and husband Joseph Hasty. Surviving siblings are Garnie Byrd, Ruby Huffine, Anna Lou Chase, Frieda Bible and Gaynelle Wilhoit.
A special thanks to Hospice, Meals on Wheels, Dr. Clark, many loyal and dedicated friends and especially to caretakers Ciara Scalf, Gloria Hall and Linda Byrd.
An announcement of a memorial - a private gathering of family and friends, with Father Ed presiding - is forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to Jewel’s special charities: Washington County, Johnson City Animal Shelter, 3411 N. Roan St., Johnson City, TN 37601; Or to: Avalon Hospice 4619 Fort Henry Dr. Kingsport, TN 37663; Or to: Meals on Wheels 704 Rolling Hill Dr., Johnson City, TN 37604.

So sorry for your loss. Will be praying for the family.
I had the pleasure of living next door to Sweet Jewel for several months when I first moved to TN. She was always a shining light, she loved to sit on her deck and watch the animals! She will be missed.
Condolences to her Families

So sorry to hear about Miss Jewell’s passing. My Dad was her Fuller Brush man back in the 1960’s and he and my Mom became good friends with your parents. They loved to go visit and see all the critters, beautiful plants and flowers she grew. She was such a delight.

Lovely obituary. Yes, I had heard many of those 'Jewelisms' and have been occasionally blessed with some wise advice. Our condolences to the family. She will be missed by many including the birds and beasts in our neighborhood.
What a beautifully written obituary! Nancy, Steve & all your family, I offer my thoughts and prayers for you. I’ve lost all the family I grew up with, so I know how hard it is. I know you can take comfort in the fact that your Mom is in a better place & is happy & healthy!

Nancy and Steve was saddened to hear of your precious Mom's passing, you both are in our prayers. Ms. Jewell was just that a jewel inside and out. She came into our lives and we were Blessed so many times with her stories, wisdom, and genuine love. Our children have so many precious memories coming to see her and our trips up to the mountains. One of the best was when our son sent Flat Stanley to visit with Ms. Jewell, Flat Stanley had a great time and I think Ms. Jewell did to. ( WE still have Flat Stanley and the adventures he had on his trip). Her faith and love for God was always an inspiration to me, and how she kept going when so many would have given up. I can hear her answering the phone well "I am to Blessed to be Stressed" when asked how are you Ms. Jewell. She will live in our hearts and memories forever. Steve and Nancy she sure loved you kids and often shared stories about you and know that you were always in her prayers. May God Bless during this time she will be missed by all who knew her!!

So sorry for your loss . she and my mother were dear friends for years ,I used to take mom to her house , mom passed in 2017 now they are friends again in heaven.
I belieive God puts people in our lives that we meet who leaves a lasting impression. Evelyn was one of those. Her beauty showed inside and out.She had a big heart and her kindness would sow a seed and it would begin to bud, branching out into a beautiful flower which brought smiles to the people around her.She had a heart full of compassion, kindness, humility, love and a gentle caring spirit which revealed a life of a believer. Her light shined.God has given me so many memories in such a short time that I will cherish and I feel so truly blessed and I will truly miss her saying to me "I am too blessed to be stressed."Evelyn was an inspiration to me.Although she was in pain she had strength. We talked a lot about God.Her belief was strong and no matter how bad a day she would have she never gave up.She put everything in God's hands and knew He was with her and in control.God remains faithful despite what we encounter.Evelyn fought the good fight she has finished the race. She kept her faith and knew she would be in the loving arms of her Father. God gives each of us a purpose in life to fulfill.Evelyn's was fulfilled. As the rain falls so lightly from the clouds so will our tears from our eyes as we remember Evelyn.Let's remember she was a beauty of God's creation. As Evelyn approached death she shed her physical body like the butterfly sheds its cocoon. She is now back in the loving arms of our Creator. She is free at last.Evelyn was a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. Although the light is a little dimmer now because of our loss in time we know the light will shine brighter again.Lets take each day and try to be a light to others as Evelyn was to us.Lets be a reflection of heavenly love for others in memory of Evelyn because she will be looking down from heaven shining just as bright as she was here on earth, letting us know she is Gods angel now.
