Beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, colleague and friend Don Squibb, age 86, of Jonesborough, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at the Johnson City Medical Center.
Devoted son of the late Hal and Maude Sherfey Squibb, Don grew up on the family farm in Sulphur Springs with his older brother Bill and younger sisters Kaye and Faye. A farm boy at heart, Don possessed many other gifts. The gift of a loving family, the gift of storytelling, the gift of laughter, the gift of a beautiful voice, and the gift to blaze a baseball from the mound or at bat.
Don was modest about his God-given talents, but embraced them with perfect pitch, from his early days singing songs in church services and Sulphur Springs High School talent shows to his college days on baseball scholarship at Lincoln Memorial University, where he earned a degree in business, and was later inducted into the LMU baseball hall of fame. It was at LMU that Don met Joyce Ellen McMurtury, the future mother of his children and the love of his life.
Early in their marriage, Don was drafted by the Cardinals and they set off for Alabama to pursue his professional baseball pitching career, until injury made other plans.
Settling back in Tennessee, Don began a career as an insurance agent with Oldham Associates in Johnson City. Then in the early 1970s, the cattle were lowing and the farm boy listened. Don and Joyce bought the Hunt house at auction right across from the family farm, where he began raising cattle and tobacco with the help of his sons, Brad and David, who affectionately called him “George Foreman” for his determination to make them as farm boy as his beloved nephew Johnny Squibb.
Still the cattle kept lowing and Don heeded the call again. He landed the part of Curly in a Johnson City Community Theater production of Oklahoma! Then the roles kept rolling in, as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music, Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, Fredrik in A Little Night Music, Harold Hill in The Music Man, and too many other musicals to mention, until Don was firmly established as the Community Theater’s leading man.
A member of Kiwanis and other clubs, and a popular and highly regarded man, at the turn of the decade Don was encouraged to seek public office, and so he ran and won his seat as Washington County Circuit Court Clerk in 1982, a position he held, unopposed election after unopposed election, for 20 successful years.
When Joyce passed away in 1998, Don found love again. He married Barbara Summers of Johnson City and they shared life, family, the farm, and cruised the world together, until Barbara’s passing in 2013. Don found peace in his long-time passion for collecting multitudes of interesting things, including an eye-popping collection of toy clowns. Maybe it was the Frederik from A Little Night Music in him. “But where are the clowns? Quick, send in the clowns. Don’t bother they’re here.”
Forever a favorite wedding and funeral soloist, throughout his later years, Don’s love of music and theater thrived through his role as a prominent player in The Jonesborough Repertory Theater, managing the box office and performing in countless musicals, including the annual fan favorite USO Show, with his equally talented daughter Sharon, right until the beautiful end.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Sharon Squibb, two sons, Brad Squibb and David Squibb, daughter-in-law Bonnie Squibb, grandsons Blake and Brady Squibb, and wife Nicole Squibb, great grandsons Connor Squibb and Gage Woods and great granddaughter Kensi Squibb, and sisters Kaye Atwood and Faye Squibb, sister-in-law Alma Lee Squibb, nephews Johnny Squibb and Mark Squibb, nieces Ramona Bird, Paula Maupin, Paulette Winkle, and Sarah Squibb, as well as the extended Squibb and McMurtry clans.
Due to the Covid-19, there will not be a receiving of friends, but there will be a viewing, and guests may sign a register book at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home 9:00 AM -4:00 PM Tuesday, July 7, 2020. The family will have a private graveside ceremony.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations in Don’s memory to the Jonesborough Repertory Theater, P.O. Box 585, Jonesborough, TN 37659.

Hobart Powell & family
The Powell and the Don Squibb families go way way back! Don and I grew up together in Sulphur Springs, played ball together at both Sulphur Springs High School and Lincoln Memorial University. Don sang at mine and Phyllis’ wedding at Sulphur Springs Methodist Church in 1955 with Virginia Light accompanying, and then both of them were able to bless us again in 2005 with their talents for our 50th wedding anniversary at the same church with the same song with Virginia on the keyboards and Don with the same beautiful voice! There’s a lifetime of special memories between not only the Don Squibb family, but also the Bill Squibb family! Lori, Hobie, Jim, and I have each of you in our thoughts and prayers! “The Springs” has certainly had lots of great folks come out of it and lost a great one in Don!

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Don Squibb. In our minds he was the face of the Jonesborough Repertory Theater, and it just won't be the same at show time. Don won't be there to greet us, and he won't be there to sing Danny Boy in the USO Show. We loved reading his wonderful biography, and being new to the area, we're sorry to have missed seeing Don as the young leading man that he was. Jonesborough was blessed to have him as one of her outstanding citizens, and certainly we will all miss him terribly.
I have so many wonderful memories of Don. He really was an inspiration and one of my heroes as a budding musical theatre actress.
I loved his performances in Oklahoma and The Music Man and I have wonderful memories of many potlucks, picnics, and riding horses at the farm. Don, you are loved by so many and will always have a special place in my heart. The Choirs of Angels just received a ringer in the Tenor section. God Bless.

To correct the obit; Don did not LAND the part of Curly in the musical "Oklahoma" I had to beg and plead to convince him to do the part. That year I was building the sets for the community theater and I knew he would be perfect after hearing his tenor voice in the church choir. Keep singing, Don.

I had the pleasure of performing with "papa" in "Fiddler on the Roof" at DCHS as Tevya's oldest daughter. He was such a pro but never too busy to give a hug! We all adored him! I moved away from Johnson City more than 20 years ago and haven't seen Don in a long time but whenever I think of him, I smile. What a lovely, lovely man. My sincere sympathy goes out to his family. I know he will be greatly missed.

“Mr. Bill” Smith
A message for Sharon, my deepest sympathiess with the loss of your father. I did not know him personally but his accolades speak to his legacy. One thing I do know about is the wonderful and talented daughter he fathered. At University School I admired your commitment to the students. You were/are a great role model. Prayers are up for you and the family. I am making a donation to the scholarship fund in his honor and memory. God bless!
I will always remember Don and his amazing voice, along with his welcoming manner. From the time we arrived at the theater to enjoy many performances, he was there to greet us and make us feel at home. His voice filled the theater, and our hearts. He will be missed, but even more he will be remembered for the wonderful gifts he shared with all who knew him.

Don was a good friend and one of the first people we meant upon moving to TN and buying our home in Sulphur Springs. We always enjoyed hearing him sing in the plays at JRT. He was a very talented man, he will be missed! He was an amazing man and would always be there for you if you needed him. That friendly wave will be missed , when we happened to see him at the Squibb's Farm barn caring for his animals.
Deepest Sympathy to his family. Our prayers are with you ! Ed & Joyce Johnston
Had not seen Mr. Squibb in a long time but had fond memories. He was my baseball coach in the old Babe Ruth League in Johnson City. In later years when I had occasion to go to the courthouse in Jonesborough he would always speak to me and remembered my name.

Your father was a very kind and thoughtful man. He invited me to his circuit court office in 1999 to help me with the responsibilities of this office as I was just elected as clerk in Johnson County, Mountain City. He was so generous with me as he extended his knowledge and time and his deputies time throughout all the activities of all the courts to me for over a period of two weeks.
What a fine and thoughtful man your father was. All of his family are in my prayers. God Bless You All !

I worked for Don all the years he was Clerk. In addition to his many talents, he was a good man to work with. He was missed after he retired. Don was a customer of Bob’s at the tire store for many years and was considered a friend. We have donkeys and we used to talk mules with Don. He will be remembered. So sorry for your loss.
