Mr. Randolph Welch “Sonny” Bennett, Jr., age 90, Jonesborough, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at Johnson City Medical Center.
Mr. Bennett was born in Washington County and the son of the late Randolph W. & Ada Steffey Bennett. He was also preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Thelma B. & Don Snyder.
Survivors include nephews and nieces, Donald R. Snyder, David M. Snyder, Martha A. Snyder and Rebecca S. Moss.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Sonny’s caregivers, Sunrise Community of Tennessee, Khloe Snakenberg, Sherrie Davis and Tina Baines Estep.
Memorial services will be conducted at a later date.

Thinking of you and wishing you peace and comfort as you remember sonny
I have such fond memories of Randolph while at Dawn of Hope. His outgoing personality and personal confidence level totally overshadowed his disability. He always had questions about anything going on at the agency, and frequently exhibited his 'in charge' attitude. One of my favorite stories was when a group of students came for a tour and were gathered in the hall awaiting their staff tour guide. Randolph encountering the group began his routine of never meeting a stranger and literally took over the tour, with the group assuming he was their guide. He was certainly one of my favorite clients, and I was sad when he elected to cease services. I am happy he lived a long life and I know he brought joy to those he met. I worked with Sonny for a little over a year & he was the brightest, kindest soul you could’ve ever met. He had the biggest heart & the gentlest smile you could ever imagine. Every morning I walked in, I was always greeted with, “Good morning gorgeous.” Sonny, we will never forget you & your memory. I love you more than you’ll ever know. You will forever be my ole man ❤️

I began teaching at the Dawn of Hope in 1972 and soon was a great friend and "admirer" of Randolph. He was mistaken numerous times as the "Director". Randolph was one of my "best" Special Olympians . He traveled with me to Nashville on several State Competitions. What fun we enjoyed competing and visiting Opryland. Such a nice looking and sweet man. I thank God for the opportunity to have known and loved Randolph Bennett.
I am so sorry to hear of Sonny passing, he sure was a treat to know and care for. Rest peacefully "corn swaggle", prayers for peace and comfort for his family and so many that cared for him and loved him dearly.

Sonny was a precious jewel. He was always saying things to make you laugh. He was the bright sunshine to a rainy day when I saw him!! Thank you for allowing us to care for him. He was a special person to his Sunrise family. He will never be forgotten. I’m praying for all of his family.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Sonny. Sonny always brightened my day when he would come into my office. Prayers for his family, and his Sunrise "family" also. May God Bless, and comfort you at this time, and always.
I met Sonny Years ago, he was such a character and would have me laugh and laugh. I remember one time, I rescued a little kitten along side the road. he held that kitten and was so tender and gentle calming it down until it fell asleep in his lap. Sleep peacefully Sonny, you touched so many lives ❤️
I cared for Sonny for over a year and a half and everyday working with him was a great experience. He always give me thumbs up saying "Aayyee" (Fonzy) and he'd throw his finger in the air saying, " Just like Tony the Tiger, they're GREAT". He was such a loving person with a good heart, he always told me hi when I walked in the door and told me to have a good day and be good when I left. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
