Mr. Dovie (Dove) Willis Whaley, age 99, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, November 30th at Governor’s Bend Retirement and Assisted Living in Erwin, Tn., surrounded by his family and friends. Mr. Whaley was born April 28th, 1920 and lived most of his life in Washington County, TN.
Mr. Whaley was a World War II veteran, serving in Company G, 22nd infantry where he was awarded a purple heart and 4 bronze stars. He was a long standing and faithful member of Bethel Church of Christ in Jonesborough, TN., where he served in multiple capacities. Mr. Whaley worked for 32 years at Paty Lumber Company in Johnson City, primarily in sales. Dove Whaley loved spending time with his family and friends, gardening, farming, handyman, and serving others. Dove Whaley was truly loved by many and will be missed by all.
Mr. Whaley was the son of the late John & Stacy Bowman Whaley. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by two daughters, Judith (Judy) Ann Fowler and Sandra (Sandy) Jean Roberts; a grandson Keith Fowler; an infant grandson; sister Ethel (Whaley) Arrowood; brother Elmer Lloyd Whaley; and nephew Clarence Whaley.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 74 years, Louise (McInturff) Whaley; a daughter, Rita Perry (James); a son Bill Whaley (Teresa), 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family expresses their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the wonderful staff of Governor’s Bend. Mr. Whaley’s devoted care givers (angels) provided compassionate, loving care, with respect and honor, like that of a cherished family member.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday December 4th, 2019 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home in Jonesborough, with Funeral services following visitation at 7 p.m., Minister Terry Lyons officiating. Interment will follow on Thursday, December 5th at 11am at Washington County Memory Gardens. Procession will meet at Dillow-Taylor at 10:20 am. Pallbearers will be Mr. Whaley’s Grandsons.

I worked with Dove at Wholesale Distributing the contractor part of Paty Lumber Co.from June 1970 until he retired. I was young and did not know much during those days. Dove always took me under his wing and would not let the other guys pick on me. I will never forget how nice he was. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Louise you are special to me.
