Roger Lee Painter

10/18/2019

Mr. Roger Lee Painter, age 74, Chuckey, passed away Friday, October 18, 2019 at Johnson City Medical Center.
Roger was born in Washington County and was the son of the late Gurney & Ada Foster Painter. He was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church. He retired from the Washington County School System.
Roger’s name was chosen, like his other siblings, from relatives and descendants of great character and respect-in his case his uncle-a man of few words and respect! Roger Painter neither exceeded nor fell short in the respect he showed anyone with whom he came in contact at work, in fun, with neighbors, with extended family, with others requesting his talents or time to solve a problem and/ or above all his brothers and sisters.
“Listen, my son, to your father’s instructions and do not forsake your mother’s teaching”. Proverbs 1:8. Roger cherished and respected the ground on which his mother Ada walked, the love she showered on him, the air she breathed, the little sayings she quipped and the space he shared with her on God’s earth!
His example of love and respect for his siblings, Pat Lamb-his “soul mate”-the love of his life and her extended family, is an honor to the value he brought to their lives. His many years of past and present friends, the neighbors of South Central and especially his many coworkers experienced his respect by his regular visits of concern, especially those experiencing times of hospitalization or grief.
“Fame and Spear” the meaning for the name “Roger”! Many have conveyed that Roger Painter was a shining example in the South Central Community for the meaning of a strong man known to be a loving and a most highly respected neighbor!
Survivors include his twin sister, Cynthia Dockery and sister, Alice Gouge; four brothers, Curtis, Bill, Norman and Gilbert Painter; fiancé, Patricia Lamb; fiancé’s daughter and son, Serena Lamb Hutton and Doug Lamb; and several nephew and nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted 6:00 pm Monday, October 21, 2019 at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church with Rev. Lenny Smith and Pastor Richard Mullin officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 pm prior to service.
Interment services will be conducted 11:00 am Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at Liberty Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Chris Painter, Tony Gouge, Steve Painter, Jim Hutton, Serena Lamb Hutton and Doug Lamb. Honorary pallbearers will be James Burgess, Gary Bassinger, Allen Gibson, and the Maintenance Department of Washington County School System.

Cynthia. sorry to hear of Roger's passing. I did not know that he was your brother until I read it in the paper. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sorry to lose Roger, a gentle giant of a cousin. His mother Ada and my grandfather Dana Foster were first cousins; their dads were twins Isaac and Abraham Foster born 1855. I knew Roger through my teaching at Jonesborough Middle for years. He was a very special gentleman! guinndjf@embarqmail.com
