Robert “Gene” Mullins, Jr. age 44 of Telford passed into the loving arm of Jesus on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center surrounded by those he loved the most. Gene was a 1992 graduate of David Crockett High School. He received his Associate Degree in engineering from Northeast State Community College. Gene spent 19 years at Hexpol Compounding where he worked as the maintenance planner and environmentalist.
Gene was proceeded in death by his maternal grandparents, Bernie and Gladys Hensley; paternal grandparents, Charles Kay and Maxie Mullins; aunt Anna Ruth Gann.
Gene never meet a stranger, always had a smile on his face and had a huge heart for kids. He was the head coach of the West View School girls’ basketball team and an assistant coach of East Tennessee 04 14u Crush softball team. Gene was the president of Washington College Ruritan where he spent numerous hours making sure that local children had a place to share in his sports passion. Gene was a member of Jackson Park Church of the Brethren.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 22 years, Heather Mathes Mullins; his daughter and pride and joy, Amelia Lesa Mullins of the home; his parents, Gene and Linda Mullins of Jonesborough; mother and father- in-law, Erwin and Lesa Mathes of Chuckey; Aunt, Evelyn Kirby of Baytown, TX; cousins, Stephanie Thibodaux (Neal) of Baytown, TX and Walter Kirby (Mary) of Baytown, TX; special friends: Janet, Jeff, Hunter, and Hayden Hartman of Greeneville, Jeremy Dykes and members of the 2018 West View Girls Basketball Team, and numerous other close friends and family.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his wonderful nurse Heather Crumley, the excellent doctors and nurses at VUMC, especially Dr. John French.
Gene was looking forward to watching his favorite player, Amelia, start her high school basketball career. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to South Greene High School Athletics, 7469 Asheville Highway, Greeneville, TN 37743 or Jackson Park Church of the Brethren Building Fund, 100 Oakgrove Avenue, Jonesborough, TN 37659.
Visitation will be at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home, Saturday, July 21st from 4pm" 7pm with service following with Rev. Jeremy Dykes officiating.
Graveside will be Sunday, July 22nd at 1pm at Asbury Cemetery on Bailey Bridge Rd.
Pallbearers will be: Neal Thibodaux, Jordan Fox, Toby Waddle, Steve Cox, Seth Kibelbek, Adam Hylton, Carl Justice, John Lewis and Brian Wallen. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Young and Hexpol Compounding Maintenance Department and Employees.

I have been where you are now and I find that with time the pain gets softer but the memories stay strong so grab those memories and cherish them forever. I have no words that could possible make you feel any better, all I can say is I'm thankful he knew our Master Jesus Christ and from what I am hearing Gene spread a lot of love to many people.
