Martha Reynolds
05/27/2016
Martha Reynolds departed this life on May 27, 2016 at the age of 88. She was born in Canton,
Illinois, and was a longtime resident of Johnson City, Tennessee, and Mobile, Alabama. Her
parents Raymond Shryock Shurtleff and Mildred Pomeroy Shurtleff preceded Martha in death, as did her sister Elizabeth Grace Shurtleff Miller, and her husband of 63 years Harold Reynolds. Her memory will be cherished by her four children Harold Raymond and wife Susan Reynolds, Glenn Wesley, Jonathan Mark and wife Debora Ellenburg Reynolds, Allen Scott and wife Iris Styran; and grandchildren Mark Ethan, Mara Caitlin, Arran Drake and Mary Rachel, Reynolds. Martha graduated from Davenport High School in Davenport, Iowa, and entered Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Sociology. After she and Harold raised their children in Elizabethton, Tennessee; Raleigh, North Carolina; Sylacauga, Alabama; and Johnson City, Tennessee; they took up residence in Mobile, Alabama, where Martha was able to pursue her lifelong interest in health sciences at the Providence School of Nursing, and became a Registered Nurse in 1984. She was able to apply her new skills and her love of children as a nurse in the Neonatal Unit at Spring Hill Medical Center, a job she very much enjoyed. As longtime members of the United Methodist Church, Dauphin Way UMC was an important part of Martha and Harold’s lives. They were dedicated members of their Sunday school class, and the Choir and Handbell Choir. Martha and Harold enjoyed many activities together, often participating in music and civic events. Together they led traditional folk dance at Mobile Infirmary's Cardiac Rehab Operation Bounce Back. Martha was a member of the PEO International Sisterhood. She enjoyed her family, travel, reading, and gardening.
A memorial service celebrating Martha’s life will be held in the Chapel of Dauphin Way United
Methodist Church, 1507 Dauphin Street, Mobile, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21st, followed
by a reception at the church. Memorials may be made to the Dauphin Way UMC Meals on
Wheels program, or to a charity of your choice.

Gil and I loved Martha and Harold and will miss them. They were always the life of the party at Couples Camp, Supper Club and many of the other activities we shared. Our prayers are with Martha's family.
Martha was a dear, sweet friend who has been sadly
missed by myself and by other members of the
D.W.U.M.choir for quite awhile now.
She shared with me a love for cats and other 4-
legged creatures;that kindness,in my estimation,
spoke well of her character and respect for all of
God's creation. She had a heart of gold, and will
always be remembered well.

So sorry to hear of Martha's death. She and Harold traveled
with us to Europe in 1985. We sang together, socialized, and
laughed a lot together. I know how much Martha loved her
church and her job as a baby nurse. We have missed Harold
for the last few years, and now we will also miss Martha. She
was certainly "one of a kind".
