Carl F. Peters, 97, died on March 30 at Hillview Health Center in Elizabethton. He had resided there for one year after several years of declining health.
Mr. Peters was born in Oslo, Norway and emigrated to the United Sates at age four with his mother and sister. He lived in Illinois for many years and earned a degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois and a Juris Doctor law degree from the John Marshall School of Law in Chicago in 1948.
He worked as a chemist for several years and then became a patent attorney. His legal career was spent at Great Lakes Research as Chief Patent Counsel in Illinois, New York, and then Elizabethton, Tennessee. He retired from Great Lakes in 1983.
Mr. Peters was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Jean Peters in December 2004 after 63 years of marriage and by his parents, Carl and Nancy Peters, a sister, Edith Vanderstok and her husband Bram Vanderstok, both of Honolulu, Hawaii.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Peters of the home, a son Carl F. Peters of Elizabethton and a granddaughter, Tracy Penny and great grandson, Laird Penny of Massachusetts as well as a nephew, Phillip Parker of California.
Susan and Mr. Peters family would like to thank Dr. Vivian Clark and the entire staff at Hillview Health center for taking such wonderful care of Dad. It meant so much and their compassion and care will always be remembered.
It was Mr. Peters’ wish that his remains be donated to the Quillen College of Medicine and there will be no formal service. Memorial donations in Mr. Peters’ name may be made to the Carter County Humane Society, P.O. Box 134, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
Dear Susan:
I commenced my career in patents in 1959 under the fine
tutelage of your father at Great Lakes Carbon. This was
when the research labs were still located in Morton
Grove, Illinois. I was going to night school at John
Marshall at the time. Carl was a patient and kind tutor
and introduced me to the many nuances of patent law. I
am so blessed that we remained in contact with one
another for at least 50 years after I left Great Lakes.

I was so sorry to hear about Carl.I worked with
him in the Law Department at Great Lakes Carbon
in New York and he was a fine and honorable
man.My wife and I always enjoyed social
occasions with Carl and Dorothy either in NY or
at the "farm" in Vermont. One year my wife and I
attended a convention in Hawaii as did Carl and
Dorothy. They both could not have been more
gracious inviting us to dinner with his sister
and her husband and generally watching out for
his younger co-worker. He will be in our
prayers.
