Raymond Dawson Miller, 87, formerly of Mill Springs Road in Jonesborough passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2015, at NHC Healthcare Center of Johnson City after a lengthy illness.
Dawson was a Jonesborough native, the son of the late Raymond and Evelyn Weeks Miller. He was preceded in death by one son, Alan Dawson Miller, two sisters Louise Wine and Lorraine Brumit and one brother, Norman Miller.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dean Morris Miller. He is also survived by two sons, Louis Miller and wife Danette and Todd Miller and wife Cassandra. Daughter-in-law, Debbie Miller, granddaughters Makalah Garland and husband Travis, and Makenzie Miller, grandsons Alan Miller and wife Kimberly and Bradley Miller and wife Jessica, three great-grandchildren, Amber, Zoey and Memphis Miller. Brother-in-law, Sonny Kiser, sister-in-law, Wyona Miller and several nieces and nephews.
Dawson was a longtime, faithful member of Jonesborough United Methodist Church where he had been Chairman of the Board, trustee and on several committees over the years. He was one of the founding members of the Open Door Sunday School Class. For many years, he drove his tractor to town to scrape snow from the parking lots of the church. He volunteered to help build Buffalo Mountain Camp. He was a dairy farmer all his life and a member of the American Dairy Association and the Farm Bureau. When he was young, he was a member of the Young Farmers and Homemakers Club. The year he was President of the club, he attended a week long convention in West Tennessee where he met his wife, Dean. He enjoyed square dancing for several years. He was special friends with the late Luther Shanks and his wife Esther.
Dawson had a caring, sweet spirit. He would help anyone in need. He never met a dog that didn’t love him. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed by many people.
Funeral services for Raymond Dawson Miller will be on Sunday, September 27, 2015, at Dillow Taylor Funeral Home in Jonesborough. The family will receive friends from 1pm-2pm with the funeral service at 2pm. Rev. Kenneth Grindstaff will be in charge of the service. Music will be under the direction of Doyle Walters. The graveside service will be at Monte Vista Cemetery in Johnson City immediately following the funeral. Pall bearers will be Tommy Hilbert, Stephen Wine, Bruce Wine, Gary Walters, Doyle Walters, and Ralph Slagle. The family would like to thank the staff of NHC Healthcare Center, Station 2, and Brookdale Senior Living for their loving care of Dawson.

Our deepest condolences to our Aunt Dean, family, friends and, of course, dear Ester. We are deeply saddened by Uncle's passing. He will be remembered as was a man of many life lessons, quiet wisdom, compassion, and respect for all he met. His work ethic was exemplary.
