Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. John 14:1-3
Betty Sue Fielden, Johnson City, passed away on July 5, 2015 at NHC Healthcare Center. Born 1928 in Knoxville, TN, she was the daughter of Dewey and Dassa Roark, Sr. Mrs. Fielden was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Before leaving the workforce to concentrate on raising her three sons, Mrs. Fielden was employed by the Knox County school system and was a cartographic engineer with the Tennessee Valley Authority. One of her most memorable jobs, however, was working for poet Carl Sandburg. She fondly recalled sitting in front of a typewriter, fingers hovering over the keys, nervously waiting for him to string together a collection of adjectives, adverbs and assorted nouns for her to type.
With a constant smile on her face and angel pin on her shoulder, Mrs. Fielden always had an ear for others’ problems, but seldom mentioned her own. She enjoyed arts and crafts, and her homemade holiday decorations made their way into numerous homes over the years. Mrs. Fielden was a member of Munsey United Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer for a women’s group, and also attended Grace Fellowship Church in Johnson City.
She leaves behind three sons and their wives, Mark and Letitia (Tish) Fielden of Nashville, Scott and Brenda Fielden of Johnson City, Dr. Kevin and Jacqueline (Jackie) Fielden of Johnson City, along with grandchildren Jacob, Derrick and Marcus Fielden, Christy Smith, Misty Stewart, David Bradley and several great-grandchildren. Mrs. Fielden was preceded in death by her husband, Alan Fielden, brothers Dewey Roark Jr., Kent Roark and sister Owana Trent.
The family would like to thank the staff at Caris Hospice, 7th floor JCMC, NHC and Visiting Angels for their compassionate care, as well as special friend and caregiver Teresa Freeman, for all the years of assistance she provided to the Fieldens.
The family will receive friends from 5â€" 7 PM Tuesday, July 7, at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home in Jonesborough. Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday 10:00 AM at Monte Vista Memorial Park
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, 207 N. Boone ST, Johnson City 37604.
