Mr. Jonah F. Gray, Jr., age 92, Simpsonville, SC, formerly of Jonesborough, TN passed away Saturday, December 6, 2014 in Greenville, SC.
Mr. Gray was born in Jonesborough and was the son of the late Jonah F. Gray, Sr. & Martha Daniels Gray. He was preceded in death by his wife, Netha Gray, his sister Cleo M. Woodward, and brothers Ira “Paddle” Gray, Floyd “Fuzz” Gray, and Herman “Dick” Gray.
He was a United States Army Veteran serving in the European Theatre during WWII. He had a 30 year career as an Optician and served most of that time as the head of the Optical Department at the Johnson City Eye Hospital.
He was a talented bridge player, and enjoyed playing golf with his wife. Flower gardening and working in his yard were major interests in his retirement years. He was a big fan of the Atlanta Braves and a die-hard Tennessee football and basketball fan.
Survivors include his two sons and their wives: Jonah French Gray III & Pat, Alamo, TX; Gary Lynn Gray & Diana, Mt. Washington, KY, and daughter and son-in-law, Teresa & Phillip Tuggle, Simpsonville, SC. He also leaves six grandchildren: Scott, Laura, Cheryl, Carrie, Alex and Erika and seven great-grandchildren: Jackson, Colton, Harrison, Connor, Krista, Gaitlin & Jonah.
Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 PM Friday, December 12, 2014 at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Jonesborough with Rev. Ron Thompson officiating.
