Ruby Virginia Saxon Poteat, age 93, passed away peacefully with her family in Bluff City TN on Friday, November 28, 2014.
She was born on April 13, 1921, in Greenville, SC to Robert Walker Saxon and Rico Clevenger Saxon. The family moved to Johnson City when she was three years old and lived there and in Jonesborough the rest of her life. She married her childhood sweetheart, F.B. ‘June’ Poteat, Jr. in 1946.
Mrs. Poteat was a member of the First Baptist Church for nearly 70 years where she taught a primary Sunday school class for 32 years. She was a member of the Dorcas Sunday school class and numerous other church committees. She served as a member of the Springdale Home Demonstration Club for more than 60 years and held many offices in the organization. She
loved her family, her church, Lady Vol basketball, and Tennessee walking horses.
Survivors include her son, Jerry Poteat and wife, Linda of Bluff City, grandchildren, Traci Gordon and husband Michael of Knoxville, grandson Jason Poteat and wife Lea Ann of Johnson City, Cheyenne Poteat of Winter Haven FL, Maria, Rosa, and Angelica Poteat of Bluff City, sisters-in-law Becky Poteat Sims of Jonesborough and Joann Saxon of Shelby NC. Great grandchildren are Madison and McKenzie Gordon of Knoxville and Gavin Poteat of Johnson City.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Walker Saxon; mother Rico Clevenger Saxon; Brother, Wallace G. Saxon of Shelby NC; husband, F. B. Poteat, Jr.; and daughter, Pam Poteat.
Deep appreciation is extended to long-time friend and caregiver, Helen Milhorn.
Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 PM Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Jonesborough with Rev. Joel Cook officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service.
Interment services will be conducted 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Maple Lawn Cemetery.
Pallbearers consist of nephews Tim Saxon, Randy Saxon, Doug Sims, Steve Poteat, David Poteat, and dear friend Roy Foster. Honorary pallbearers include Homer G’Fellers, Dean Crumley, Jack Young, Dwight Treadway, Alfred Greenlee, David Keys, Reese Hulse, and Keith Toth.
