James Harold Comer

Mr. James Harold Comer, Jonesborough, died Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at his home.
Harold was a native of Johnson City, lived in Jonesborough since 1951 and was the son of the late Robert G. & Hallie Watson Hicks Comer.
Harold was a graduate of Science Hill High School and East Tennessee State University.
Harold worked for Cannon’s Grocery and Klopman Mills to pay his way through college. He later taught school for 1 year, worked for J.C. Penney’s, TVA in Scottsboro, Ala, and Gay & Taylor Insurance Adjustors. He then went into the adjusting business for himself but soon decided that called for too much traveling and being away from his family. He changed to selling insurance at Comer Insurance Agency where he was active until October 2013.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Earlie Hicks, Wayne Comer and sisters Clara Comer and Muriel King.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 63 years, Joanne Painter Comer, Jonesborough; four children, Rebecca Comer and husband Ed Logan of Limestone, David Neil Comer and long time friend Norma Gregg, Rex Comer, both of Jonesborough, and Lisa Hutchison and husband Charles of Little Rock, Arkansas. Other surviving relatives include grandchildren Rachel Comer Baker & husband Jason, Melanie Comer, and James David Comer, brothers-in-law Shelby Painter & wife Phyllis of Piney Flats, and Bob King of Johnson City and a number of nieces and nephews.
In early life he was a member of the Central Baptist Church, Johnson City, transferring his membership in 1951 to the Jonesborough Presbyterian Church where he served as elder and Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a member of the Civitan Club, Johnson City Elks, and numerous insurance organizations.
A family burial will be held August 8, 2014 at the Monte Vista Burial Park, Johnson City. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014 at 3:00 PM at the Jonesborough Presbyterian Church with Rev. Allen Huff officiating.
