Mr. Jake A. Southerland, age 90, Jonesborough, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital.
Mr. Southerland was born in Washington County and son of the late F.B. & Ola White Southerland.
Jake professed faith in Christ at age 11 and joined Bowmantown Baptist Church. He was always very active in the church serving in various positions including Sunday school teacher, secretary, clerk, treasurer and trustee. He later joined Trinity Baptist Church where he was a member of the Challengers Sunday School Class.
Mr. Southerland retired from Tennessee Eastman Company in 1986 after 43 years of service. After retirement, he and his wife, Eva enjoyed some extensive travel with Knoxville Tours.
He was a charter member of the Bowmantown Ruritan Club. He served the club as secretary and treasurer for a period of time.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Eva Campbell Southerland, Jonesborough; sons and daughters-in-law, Tony & Mary Southerland and Michael & Terri Southerland; grandchildren, Aaron Southerland (Missy), Benjamin Southerland (Paige), James Southerland (Emily), Neal Southerland (Marcy), Eric Southerland (April), Justin Southerland (Erica) and Mallory Breeden (Josh); great-grandchildren, Olivia, Ella, Noah, Alyssa, Jake and Michael; brother, Fred Southerland; sister, Ester Shanks; brother-in-law, Jim Campbell; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted 8:00 PM Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Dr. Mark Harrod officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday prior to the service.
Interment services will be conducted 1:00 PM Friday, May 23, 2014 at Fairview Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. James Mahoney, Challengers Sunday School Class, Bo Bowman, Ben Bowman, Larry Shanks, David Jones, Ward Hilemon, Ken Glover, and his faithful barber for years, Mack Keys.
