Velma V. Black

10/14/2013
Mrs. Velma V. Black, age 91, Jonesborough, passed away Monday October 14, 2013, at Durham-Hensley Nursing Home.
Velma was the daughter of William David and Maudie Mae Walters. She was the youngest of five children: Ina, Ivis, Ralph, and her twin Vera.
She spent most of her childhood years in Tennessee then moved to the Washington, DC area. While there, she met and married Roy Andrew Brooks. They had three children, Carol, David, and Roy. They raised their children in Maryland. Their marriage ended in divorce. Velma then met and married the love of her life James Black and they eventually moved back to Tennessee where they became active in the church.
Velma loved doing crafts. She was an excellent seamstress, even sewing the fur back onto a squirrel’s tail. She wasn’t afraid to tackle any job, from helping to repair the roof (and falling off the ladder!!) to making Christmas presents for everyone. She loved animals and always seemed to have dogs around her.
Velma leaves to mourn her husband Jim Black, her sons David Brooks (Cindy) and Roy Craig Brooks, her grandsons David Brooks Jr (Tana) and Roy Craig Brooks Jr., three great grandchildren Zachary, Joshua, and Grace Brooks and two step great grandsons Steven and Robert Baldoni. Her daughter Carol Mae Baker predeceased her.
Funeral services for Mrs. Black will be 7:00 PM Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral with Pastor Paull Dixon officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM prior to the service.
Graveside services will be 10:00AM Thursday October 17, 2013 at Mountain Home National Home. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
