Mr. Paul Whaley, Jr., age 78, Johnson City, passed away Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the Johnson City Medical Center.
Mr. Whaley was a native of Washington County and son of the late Paul Whaley, Sr. & Lou Elswick Whaley. In addition to his parents, Mr. Whaley was also preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Raybourne and a brother, Freddie Lee Whaley.
He was of the Christian faith.
Mr. Whaley was a Master Sergeant in the Army National Guard serving as a Tank Commander during the Korean War.
Mr. Whaley was a retired Structural Draftsman. He was a pioneer in the development of the interstate systems. He designed many of the cloverleaves and bridges that we use today.
He was a 32nd Degree Master Mason, belonging to the Rhea F&AM Lodge # 47. He enjoyed hunting, trapping and wood working.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Michael & Robin Haigh-Whaley, Jonesborough; grandchildren, Amanda Alford, Corey Whaley, Joshua Haigh, MaKayla Whaley and Jakob Reed; one great-grandson, Greyson Snyder; brothers, Carlos Whaley, Will David Whaley and Lewis Whaley; three sisters, Geneva Whaley, Lena Pearl Ensor and June King; dearest friend and soul mate, Barbara Manning; and several nephews and nieces.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Friday, March 1, 2013 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted 12, Noon, Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home Chapel. Interment services will follow at Deakins Cemetery with Military Honors.
Pallbearers will be Corey Whaley, Curtis Winegar, Joshua Haigh, Michael Whaley, Byron Reece and Eddie Thomason.
