Mrs. Gladys Mae Brown, age 92, Jonesborough, passed away Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Lakebridge Health Care Center after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Brown was a native of Hawkins County and daughter of the late Arnold & Alice Wyman Hayes. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Brown was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Samuel M. Brown, infant daughter, Carolyn June Brown, grandson, B.J. Ford, brother, Johnny Hayes and two sisters, Thelma Manis and Helen Hunley.

She was a 65 year member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and worked in various positions.

Mrs. Brown was a 1964 graduate of ETSU, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She taught in the Washington County School System for 23 years and in 1971 was recognized as a Leader of American Education. Mrs. Brown was a member of National Education Association and Tennessee Education Association.

She loved to quilt, work with flowers and read.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William A. & Carolyn Brown, Bly, Oregon; three daughters and sons-in-law, Bobbie & Oscar Woodruff, Ernestine Shelton and Wilma & Tim Ford, all of Jonesborough; three sisters, Marie Fields, Rogersville, Mabel Richardson, Gray and Opal Davis, Bulls Gap; grandchildren, Alan Brown, Brent Brown (Keenie), Belinda Mink, (Carl), Daniel Woodruff (Sandra), Adam Shelton (Angie), Jesse Ford (Melissa), Tony Shelton (Kathy), Rebecca Sell (Mike), and Amanda McCurry (Jeff); great-grandchildren, Jessica Mink, James Mink, Jenna Mink, Cameron Shelton (Kelly), Austin Shelton, Noah Shelton, Jordan Shelton, J.T. Sell, Mickaela Sell, Samuel Shelton, Alyssa Shelton, Kaylyn McCurry, Lyndy McCurry, Chloe Ford and Jake Ford.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Pastor Brian Nulf officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 pm Wednesday prior to the service. Interment services will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Woodruff, Tony Shelton, Adam Shelton, Jesse Ford, Cameron Shelton and Austin Shelton. Honorary pallbearers will be Allan Brown, Brent Brown, Jeff McCurry, Carl Mink, Mike Sell, J.T. Sell, Jeff Coggins and Doyle Cook.

The family would like to send special thanks to Kim Clark, a caregiver, Medical Center Hospice, Lakebridge Healthcare Center and Dr. Denise Sibley for their wonderful love and care.
