SERVICE SCHEDULE

Mr. Rufus Lancaster Hammitt, Jr. age 74, Clinton, TN passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at Methodist Medical Center, Oakridge, TN.

Mr. Hammitt was a native of Washington County and son of the late Rufus L. Sr. & Alpha Ingle Hammitt. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hammitt was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tara Haire and special niece, Kim Jamerson.

He was a member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church, Jonesborough, Tn. He was dedicated to watching his grandchildren play ball.

Mr. Hammitt was employed by North Clinton Elementary School as Maintenance Supervisor. “If it needed to be fixed Rufus fixed it.”

Survivors include his wife, Victoria Lynn Gleason Hammitt, Clinton; two sons and daughter-in-law, Anthony Hammitt and James & Kelly Hazelhurst, all of Clinton; daughter and son-in-law, Laurie & Russell DeGroat, Telford; grandchildren, Shalene Davenport (Edward), Whitney Ooten (John), Shane Roth, Weston Hazelhurst (Kassie), Sara Hammitt and Blayke Hazelhurst; three great-grandchildren, Shelby Davenport, Lawson Davenport and Wyatt Ooten; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Eloise & Lester Archer, Lula & Gale Gray, Nelta & Henry Cox, Pat & Gerald Jamerson all of Jonesborough and Famah & Jim Fenner, Johnson City; two brothers, Charles Hammitt and wife Linda, Jonesborough and Beau Hammitt and partner Lionel Chiasson, Johnson City; two sisters-in-law, Judy Holloway and Rickie Rome (Vernon); special friend, Melissa Anderson; and several nephews and nieces.

Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 pm Sunday, August 19, 2012 at Sulphur Springs Cemetery with Pastor Jon Reed officiating. Memorial services will be conducted 6:00 pm Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at North Clinton Elementary School.

Pallbearers will be family.

Tony, I just recently found out about your dad, and I just wanted to let you know you are in my thoughts and prayers, even though it has been a few months. I think of you often and would love to hear you sing again. Praying for peace and comfort for you and your family.

My son attends NCES, We are heartbroken of this news. My daughter loved to go pick up her brother from school because when she did Rufus gave her his keys and helped her unlock the doors to school and he would always come see her. He was such a sweet man and we miss him so so much.

My kids are students at NCES. Mr. Rufus was always so friendly, helpful and playful with all the staff and students. His family is in my families prayers in this dire time of need.
